Alberta Main Street to host business district cleanup on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at 10AM. Aid in the annual spring-cleaning of NE Alberta Street between MLK and NE 33rd Avenue, meet your neighbors and celebrate at the Golden Garbage Awards.

“Keep it Clean: 2012” is the second annual Earth Day cleanup event hosted by Alberta Main Street. This community event is a continuation of the Alberta Main Street Cl 1ee0 ean Street Program, which installed nineteen garbage/recycling receptacles on Alberta Street in 2011.

In keeping with the spirit of the neighborhood, this will be more than just a day of litter and graffiti removal; it is a day to come out in support of community. In 2011, over 125 volunteers offered their Saturday morning, bagging an impressive amount of garbage and removing over ten years’ worth of rotting flyers from telephone poles. New this year, thanks to support from Interstate Batteries, volunteers will be collecting and recycling batteries and people can drop off their batteries at the event.

According to Alberta Main Street Executive Director, Sara Wittenberg over 100 volunteers have already pre-registered online for this year’s event. “This community cares about this street – the level of involvement and support is fabulous!” Many local businesses are providing support in the form of nourishment, thank you gifts and of course the Golden Garbage Awards. A special thanks go out to event sponsors Pacific Power, Umpqua Bank, Portland Farmers Market, Bella Faccia Pizzeria, Salt & Straw Ice Cream, Neil Kelly Home Performance, LifeWorks NW, Dorey Design Group, Exhale Yoga and SOLVE.

Volunteers will be assigned areas of Alberta Street when they check-in the morning of the event at UMOJA/Lifeworks NW (4941 NE 17th Avenue - corner of NE 17th Avenue & Alberta Street). Volunteers are asked to bring their own gloves and any tools they have that will aid in clean up. Volunteers can pre-register online at http://albertamainst.org/whats-happening/earth-day/.  Contact info@albertamainst.org for more information.

The Earth Day Clean Up & Celebration will take place on Saturday, April 21, 2012, rain or shine, from 10am to 2:30pm between MLK & NE 33rd Avenue.  Alberta Main Street, one of the three Portland Main Street programs, is advancing efforts to develop Alberta Street as a vibrant, creative and sustainable commercial district serving residents and visitors to the community.
